5th U.S. Combustion Meeting Report
March 2007 Steve Buckley
The 5th U.S. Combustion meeting
was held March 25-28 at the Town and Country
Resort in San Diego, CA, hosted by U.C. San Diego Center for Energy Research
and the MAE Dept. There were a total of 427 participants at the meeting,
including 174 students. There were a total of 289 oral presentations and 34
poster presentations given at the meeting. The oral presentations were
given in 8 parallel sessions in 15-minute slots, from Monday morning to
Wednesday mid-day. Two invited speakers presented talks each morning Monday
- Wednesday, and the poster session was in the second half of Thursday
afternoon.
Major sponsorship for the meeting included grants from the National Science
Foundation and the Army Research Office. Local sponsorship included
generous donations from Solar Turbines, Inc., and General Atomics.
Cambridge Press, Taylor and Francis, and Elsevier also contributed to the
meeting. These sponsorships helped considerably in making the meeting
affordable.
Feedback on the meeting has indicated that it was a technical and social
success. The weather was positive, and the venue was nice. The Program
Chair (Kal Seshadri) had put together an outstanding program of invited
talks, and many attendees commented that the mix of more social time and
faster talks (shortened from 20-25 minutes in earlier meetings to 15
minutes) helped make the meeting productive in a business and a technical
sense.
